Proposed Ninth Line data centre would bypass Oakville’s local grid

Oakville News reports that Mayor Rob Burton says a proposed 320-megawatt artificial intelligence data centre on Ninth Line would receive electricity through Ontario’s system rather than Oakville Hydro’s local network.

Burton made the comments during Oakville council’s Sept. 28 meeting, after Oakville Enterprises Corporation, which owns Oakville Hydro, presented to council. He said arrangements had been made for a direct provincial connection and that the project would not threaten Oakville’s grid.

HIVE BUZZ HPC has purchased a 25-acre property at 3480 Ninth Line and is considering a $3.5-billion facility there. The town has not received a formal application, and council approved a one-year freeze on data centres and other high-intensity computing facilities on Aug. 11.
