Oakville man charged in York police dark web investigation
CHCH News reports that Pui Yan Lai, 42, of Oakville has been charged in York Regional Police’s Project Ghostwire investigation. Police allege the months-long probe targeted online sales of controlled substances through the dark web and encrypted communication platforms. Four other people from Mississauga, Toronto, Vaughan and Brampton were also charged.
Police say search warrants executed on Feb. 20 led to the seizure of drugs with an estimated street value of about $3 million, along with cryptocurrency, Canadian currency, a carbine assault rifle and ammunition. The seized items included more than 5.5 kilograms of fentanyl, which police estimated represented approximately 48,000 potentially fatal doses.
Lai faces a charge of conspiracy to commit an indictable offence. Anyone with information can contact the York Regional Police Guns, Gangs and Drug Enforcement Unit at 1-866-876-5423 ext. 7817, or Crime Stoppers of York Region anonymously.
