6,420-home development proposal under review at Trafalgar and Burnhamthorpe

Oakville News reports that a proposal for a 27-building, mixed-use community at the southeast corner of Trafalgar and Burnhamthorpe roads is under review by Oakville. The plan includes 6,420 homes and 10 towers ranging from 18 to 30 storeys, with construction proposed in phases over two decades.

The 20-hectare property currently contains the Vic Hadfield Golf and Learning Centre, farmland and a vacant farmhouse. The proposal includes commercial space, a new public street network, 7,703 parking spaces, public and privately owned public space, and land for future school properties.

The proposal was presented at a public hearing on Sept. 8, where councillors raised concerns about density and green space. Westerkirk Capital planning consultant Eric Turcotte said construction would likely begin in seven to nine years, with completion expected to take 15 to 20 years.

Charges withdrawn against Oakville man in Pearson gold-heist case

The Hamilton Spectator reported that Crown prosecutors withdrew charges against Amit Jalota, 42, of Oakville, after saying there was no reasonable prospect of a conviction. The Crown sought to withdraw three charges, including theft over $5,000 and possessing currency allegedly obtained through an indictable offence.

Jalota had been arrested after $24 million in gold and cash was stolen from an Air Canada cargo facility at Pearson International Airport in April 2023. Three other accused men remain scheduled for a jury trial.

The Crown’s reasons for ending the case were not disclosed because they are subject to a publication ban. Jalota’s lawyer said the case had caused significant harm to his reputation and livelihood.
