Police warn of cellphone provider impersonation scam
Oakville News reports that Halton Regional Police Service is warning residents about a fraud in which criminals impersonate legitimate cellphone providers to obtain mobile devices and commit identity-related fraud.
Victims may receive unsolicited calls offering discounted plans, account upgrades or complimentary phones. Fraudsters can use personal information to make the offer seem legitimate, then ask for additional account or verification details.
After a device is delivered, victims may be told to return it using fraudulent shipping instructions. They can remain responsible for financing agreements, balances and monthly service charges. People who believe they were victimized can contact HRPS and report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
