West Nile virus confirmed in Oakville resident
INhalton Oakville reported that an Oakville resident has tested positive for West Nile virus. Halton Region announced the case on Aug. 28, identifying it as the first laboratory-confirmed human case in the western Greater Toronto Area this year.
Halton recorded 27 mosquito pools testing positive across the region this year, including 11 in Oakville. Two positive pools were reported between Aug. 24 and 30, one in Oakville and one in Burlington.
Halton Associate Medical Officer of Health Dr. Joanna Oda is advising residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites and remove standing water until the fall frost. Recommended precautions include using insect repellent containing DEET or Icaridin, wearing light-coloured long clothing and ensuring window and door screens are intact.
