Halton police weigh education and enforcement for e-scooter safety
Oakville News reports that Halton Regional Police is considering how to address e-scooter safety, with education and communication potentially taking priority over enforcement. Chief Steve Tanner said any police action would likely focus on dangerous riding rather than routine stops of young riders.
The Halton Police Board did not vote on a proposed notice of motion. Chair Jeff Knoll said it would return in September after further discussions with police and other partners, and could be changed before then.
Knoll said Ontario’s framework does not allow children under 16 to operate e-scooters legally, while calling for parents, schools, municipalities, police and the province to work together. Board members also discussed municipal enforcement and injuries associated with the devices.
