Halton confirms first human West Nile case of 2026

Halton Region media releases reported on Aug. 28 that a Halton resident tested positive for West Nile virus, marking the region’s first laboratory-confirmed human case of the year.

Halton Associate Medical Officer of Health Dr. Joanna Oda said residents should continue protecting themselves and their families from mosquito bites until the fall frost, while removing mosquito breeding sites. The region also provides information about personal protection and its surveillance and control efforts on halton.ca.

The release says most people infected with West Nile virus have no symptoms, while a small proportion may develop severe illness affecting the central nervous system. Standing water on public property can be reported by calling 311.

Rose Corp. plans 5,600-home Oakville community

RENX reports that The Rose Corporation is planning a 27.3-acre master-planned community at 420 South Service Rd. E. in Oakville. The site is temporarily being used to store shipping containers and motor vehicles under an interim zoning use bylaw.

Oakville town council unanimously approved the project’s official plan and zoning bylaw amendment applications last month. The development still requires further approvals, including a draft plan of subdivision, site plan and building permit.

At full build-out, the project is expected to include about 5,600 homes in 14 buildings, approximately 180,000 square feet of retail and commercial space, and about five acres of parks and open space. The company is targeting late 2027 to begin construction on the first phase, a purpose-built rental apartment.
