Ontario teacher contract talks stall as school year approaches

CHCH News reports that Ontario government negotiations with teachers’ unions have stalled as the school year approaches. Education union contracts have expired, and the sides are awaiting an Ontario Labour Board ruling on whether contract issues should be negotiated locally or provincially. Possible strike action remains a concern.

Education Minister Paul Calandra said he expects the government and unions to reach an agreement and does not anticipate labour challenges. Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles criticized the uncertainty and said the government had failed to meet its promise of securing a contract by Labour Day.

The government is also moving ahead with a plan to include attendance in high school marks, while saying parent-excused absences for activities such as sports, band and family vacations will not be affected. A Student and Family Support Office is being created for every school board, with offices required to acknowledge concerns within two days and respond within five, except in complex cases.
