The outlet said many people it spoke with did not view the proposal as a threat and believed the lake would continue to be known as Lake Ontario. Residents identified as Sammy, John and Mohammed described the name as longstanding, meaningful and connected to Indigenous roots and Canada’s diversity.
The article said Prime Minister Mark Carney also addressed the origins of the Lake Ontario name on social media. It did not provide details about the order’s legal status or whether any renaming has taken effect.

Oakville dog attack investigation continues after Chihuahua dies
Oakville News reports that Ken Heywood is seeking answers after his two-year-old Chihuahua, Junior, was attacked by a larger dog during a walk on July 21. Heywood says the incident occurred near Queen Mary Drive and Riverside Drive and that Junior suffered serious injuries, including a collapsed lung and broken ribs.
Junior was taken to emergency veterinary care but was later euthanized after the veterinary team determined his injuries were unlikely to be survivable, according to Heywood’s friend Sue Bartholomew. The Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton says it is investigating and that the other dog is no longer in Oakville.
The organization says the investigation involves gathering information from the people involved, witnesses and other evidence. It has not confirmed the other dog’s breed, while Heywood says he remains in contact with Humane Society staff but wants more information about what will happen next.
