Kerr Street Mission launches refrigerated food truck
Kerr Street Mission has launched its first refrigerated truck, allowing the Oakville food bank to collect and distribute larger food donations. Oakville News reports the truck was unveiled at a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by town councillors, Mayor Rob Burton and Oakville West MP Sima Acan.
The Rotary Club of Oakville provided a donation that, according to KSM Executive Director Gary O’Neill, covered the truck’s full cost. The vehicle replaces a smaller refrigerated van that staff said lacked the capacity to manage large donations from retail partners.
KSM reported that weekly food-service use rose to 1,300 clients from an average of 1,200 last year and 400 to 450 before COVID-19. Staff estimate the new truck will meet the organization’s needs for the next seven to 10 years.
