Oakville approves one-year pause on new data centres
The Canadian Press reported that Oakville has approved a one-year moratorium on new data centres, making it the first Ontario municipality to take that step. The pause comes as municipalities consider how to address facilities used to power artificial intelligence.
Oakville councillors directed town staff to examine whether regulations should be changed to address potential noise, vibration and emissions from data centres, along with broader land-use issues.
The town says it has no formal data centre applications. Hive Digital Technologies announced plans in May for a 320-megawatt AI facility in the Greater Toronto Area, and land records show a Hive subsidiary bought property in Oakville days before the announcement.
